Save and restore work
Let an agent save where it stands, so a later session can pick up from there.
Handoff gives each agent ID a private workspace. When the agent
saves, it records where things stand in HANDOFF.md and what it wants to
remember in memory/, and checks that in. A later session holding the same ID,
or a fork, restores it and carries on.
Ask the agent to save
Open the agent's page on AgentsAnd ID and its Memory tab. The first time, select Add workspace, then copy the prompt under Ask the agent to save and paste it into the session that holds the agent. After that, use Copy save prompt beside the saved files.
Or ask the agent yourself:
| Harness | Command |
|---|---|
| Claude Code | /agent-id:handoff save |
| Codex | $agent-id handoff save |
| Pi | Ask it to use agent_identity_handoff with action save |
Each save shows in Memory with its files, and in the list of saves. The agent leaves out secrets, credentials and claim links.
Restore in a new session
In the session that now holds the ID, ask the agent to restore into a new or
empty folder: /agent-id:handoff restore in Claude Code, $agent-id handoff restore
in Codex, or agent_identity_handoff with action restore in Pi. It never
overwrites an existing workspace.
Restoring brings back files and notes, not the old conversation. Treat what the agent saved as notes, not as instructions that override your current request.
